Niya Ancient City

Niya ancient city is located in the Taklimakan desert, north of Niya County. It is about 150kms far from Niya County downtown. Niya ancient city has supplied precious materials to the study of the relationships between the empire located in the Central Plains and ancient kingdoms in the Western Regions, which covers the area of the present day Xinjiang and parts of Central Asia.

It is also great importance to the study of the cultural exchanges between the East and the West, as well as the Silk Road. Archaeologist Aurel Stein discovered the ruin early in 20th century and since then archaeologists have continued their exploration to the ruins. The Chinese archaeologists took the steps to the ruins of Niya in 1959. They achieved great a lot in the exploration of Niya.A Sino-Japanese expedition team of archaeologists and scientists have led expeditions on the site with the approvement by China State Bureau of Cultural Relics in 1993. They have brought the richest yields in the field work about Niya in nearly a century.It is the remains of the lost ancient city of Niya are believed to the ancient Jingjue Kingdom during the Han and Jin dynasties. The ancient Jingjue Kingdom was at the south end of the Silk Road, sprawling over an area 25 km long from south to north and 5-7 km wide from east to west.

In the Site, the ruins of foundation of houses, courtyards, tombs, stupas, temples, fields, orchards, channels, kilns, and smelting workshops, etc., have been excavated, together with a large quantity of cultural relics, including wood ware, bronze, pottery, stone ware, woolen articles, coins, etc. In 1993, eight tombs were discovered at the northern part of the ruin. Some of them were already exposed when they were laid out in hollowed out logs or wooden trunks with an outer coffin. In 1962 the ancient site of Niya was designated as a major cultural site under the preservation of the Autonomous Region of Xinjiang. In 1996 the ancient city of Niya became a state protected cultural relic site. To visit the Niya ancient city, the tourist need s special permit to get in.

Hotan Museum

Hotan museum is located in the city of Hotan prefecture. It is the exhibition room for much kind of excavated cultural relics from Hotan prefecture. These cultural relics reflected the long history of Hotan.

They are the proof of the areas’ splendid culture, economical conditions, political situations, life and customs in the past. These relics reflect the “Silk Road” which affected the historical and cultural exchanges as well as trade between China, it’s nationalities and Central Asia and Western countries. King of Walnut Tree

King of walnut tree is located in Baghqi Township of Hotan County. It is about 10kms far from Hotan city. Hotan County is the biggest county of Hotan prefecture which produces walnut. The walnuts which the people selling in the market everywhere in Xinjiang is, mostly produced in Baghqi Township or in Hotan County.

The king of the walnut trees has a long trunk, it’s height is about 20ms and the crown of the tree is very large. The tree trunk is so big that it takes five people stretched out holding hands to go around it. It covers an area of about 666square meters. Walnut Tree has a history of more then 500 years old, and also it has a significant from other walnut trees, that is the reason local people called it King of walnut tree.

Every year this walnut tree bears 5 – 6, 000 thin shelled of walnuts and it’s quality is belong to high quality. Hotan’ s walnuts ripe early and are big, the shell is thin and cracks easily. Their nutritive value is very high. They are not only one of the best nuts but also rich in protein. That is the reason Hotan walnut is famous all over the China.

Longevity of Hotan People

Xinjiang is one of the four big longevity area in the world as published by the International Medical Science Institute in 1985. In Xinjiang, Hotan has a high concentrated area of longevity people, through the results of the 4th census taken in China; it became clear that there are more than 140 old people in Hotan. This situation on longevity has led the world to attach great importance to nutrition.

The Hotan climate belong to dry continental climate, sandstorms blown by the wind most of the time in autumn. Why do Hotan people have longevity? It should be researched and analyzed on the sociological, environmental, psychological and nutritious aspect. Hotan is at the edge of the Taklimakan desert, but its environment in the oasis is good. Even though there is little rain and snowfall but the massive snow melting from the Karakurum and Kunlun Mountain range is source of water for the farmland.

The water is the life of the oasis and therefore also the life of the people all over the world. The water for the Hotan people to drink is from the melted water from the snow from the mountain, people considered that the water from the mountain is much betters then the water from the tap water at home. Testing shown that in the water from the mountain is rich for elements, There is magnesium, manganese, iron, zinc and other elements which are beneficial to people body. Among the elements, the manganese is gives longevity. These old people who are living in Hotan are basically living in the countryside. The common thing they all have is they do manual hard work every day. they all walks bare feet during the summer time. Medicine proved that, all the organs of the body has a controlling system on the button of the feet, if the person walks bare feet ,it gives massage to the persons body.

All the longevity people have another common habit is that, they sleeps early in the evening and gets up early in the morning. they eats mainly nan bread with local tea and local made rose jam. Usually they eat fresh vegetables, dried and fresh fruits along with grain, flour and rice. They all have in common is that none of them smokes. They all Have a bright and cheerful disposition is also a common specialty among the longevity people. They are usually happy, gentle, keeping a good relationship with their neighbors,having close relationships among the family members and also have a happy marriage. This kind of open mind is beneficial for the health. Hotan is a famous all over the Xinjiang about traditional Uyghur doctoring. Traditional Uyghur medicine has done deep research on keeping good health. The Uygur traditional medicine has a regulating effect on the human body. This is also one of the reasons why the Hotan people are so healthy and have longevity.

Atlas Silk Factory


Jiya township in Lop County, Xinjiang is renowned for its Atlas Silk and is located about 15 km from Hotan city. In the Uyghur language the word atlas means “tie-dyed silk.” Among the traditional products of the Hotan region, Atlas Silk dates from 2,000 years ago.

The texture is soft, light and graceful, and the colors of Atlas Silk are vibrant, rich, and appear changeable. Traditional motifs of the Hotan region are portrayed in Atlas Silk fashions. The single silk factory in Jiya township invites you to observe local Uyghur people spinning, dyeing, and weaving Atlas Silk on traditional wooden looms. Both to satisfy local demand and the tastes of tourists,the factory produces not only customary women’s clothing of Uyghur design in various patterns, but also caps, hats, and scarves. For men, neckties and robes are made. The factory proudly displays the traditional artistic skill of the Uyghur people, and is not just a tourist attraction.
