Sayram means “a lake on the ridge” in Mongolian language and “blessing” in Kazak language. It is one of the largest alpine lakes in Xinjiang. It is 20 km long from east to west and 30 km wide north to south with covered an area of 454 square km.
It’s average elevation is 2,073 meters above the sea level. It is said, Sayram lake came to existence about 70 million years ago during the Himalayas period of orogenic movement, sudden sank of this section of Tianshan mountain sank and Sayram lake came to existence.
The water in the lake is crystal clear. You can see ducks and swans swimming around. Cattles are grazing around the pasture land. It is surrounded by the pasture land where you can can do hike or ride a horse. Best time for the lake is July and August because at the time Mongol and Kazak herdsman holds Nadam festival.
The lake is famous for its natural scenery, flocks of duck and swans on the lake, it has abundant grazing land for sheep’s and horses on the slope of the mountain. The lake area is inhabited by Mongol and Kazak ethnic groups. Best time to visit Sayram Lake is Summer and Autumn when the grasses changing color and wild flowers blooming.
