Even today, the local community, reached by this single road from Kashgar, continues to live a traditional way of life. This region is known to be part of the primary route of the “Old Silk Road” connecting China and Western Asia. The prime attraction here is the Stone Fort, with a history of more than 2000 years. The fort had once served as the central palace of the Tajik Kingdom. Our visit
here will be followed by the Tashkurgan grassland which is next to the Stone Fort. Tashkurgan Grassland is where you can visit free grazing sheep, goat, yak, and horses. In summer, locals put up tents and serve lunch and dinner for tourists. Last but not least, you will visit Tashkurgan cultural and custom museum that is where you can learn about Tajik culture and customs. Activities: After the breakfast at the hotel, we will head to Shipton’s Arch, the world’s tallest natural arch. It is reached after 2 hours driving from Kashgar, and a 45-minute walk.
The first half of the way is by road, theremainder is off-road driving. From as far as can be reached by car, we will continue another 45 minutes on foot. This trek involves climbing a ladder and traversing a rocky gorge on the mountain leading to Shipton’s Arch. This Arch was discovered by the famous English mountaineer Eric Shipton in 1947, while traveling between Tashkent and Kashgar and made
known to the West in his book Mountains of Tartary. The arch has figured in the Guinness Book of Records for its exceptional height, estimated to be 1,200 feet, about equal to that of the Empire State Building. Its span is roughly 180 feet. The “true” height of the arch is debatable: viewed from the east (the usual approach route) it appears to be 200 feet tall from the top of the 100-foot rubble pile; from the west side (approachable only via technical ascent), the height is closer to the estimated 1,200 feet. Thus, the height depends upon what is considered to constitute the base of the arch either the base of the rubble pile (partially under the arch where the span achieves its maximum width) or the floor of the west side canyon head, 900 feet lower. After visiting the arch, we will follow the same trail back to the car/van and return to Kashgar.
