Southern Pasture
South Mountain Scenic Spot is located to the south of Urumqi on the northern foot of Karawuquntag Mountain which is part of Tianshan Mountain. It is about 75, approximately 2 hours driving distance to Urumqi.
It is very big with West Baiyanggou, Juhuatai, East Baiyanggou, Mount Zhaobi, Miaoergou and Daxigou from west to east. It is the natural scenic spot with excellent natural pasture with sheep and horses dotted the lush grassland, profuse with thick spruce and windflowers with the mountain’s icy peaks reaching towards the clouds, crystal ice glaciers, winding mountains, steep cliffs, dense forests, verdant woods, running rivers and fresh, clean air, offering a unique retreat from scorching summer days.
Average elevation of South Mountain Scenic Spot is 2252 meters above the sea level with average rainfall of 500-600 millimetres. Screened by snow-capped peaks dotted with tall and straight dragon spruce trees, it is an ideal place for an excursion. The Kazaks usually spend their summer here between May and October and graze their herds.
It is great land for hiking with gushing valleys and waterfalls falling down the hillsides and the ginseng herb growing on the hillside. People who are settled here is Kazaks, so tourist can take a horseback tour guided by local Kazaks. Tourist also have chance to visit Kazaks yurt, where the host welcome you in with fragrant milk tea, mare’s milk, cheese and roasted lamb. The Kazak people are hospitable and generous. If you are fortunate enough, you will have chance to see the horse-racing or traditional Kazak dancing when you made your visit to their.
Note: Yurt-style hotels are available if visitors would like to stay overnight. It is necessary to bring warm clothes and flashlight.
